Deals of the week: a sweet price on a Gear VR headset and more

— 1:09 PM on September 16, 2016

Happy Friday, gerbils. Good deals were especially hard to come by today, but we think we've scrounged up a few decent ones. Here's what we deemed worthy.

  • Corsair's Vengeance LPX DDR4-2666 32GB RAM kit is $136.99 at Newegg today, putting it among the cheapest 32GB DDR4 kits on the site. This particular kit spreads its capacity across two DIMMs, leaving room for future upgrades in four-DIMM-slot motherboards like those built for Intel's various Skylake platforms. Double up on these kits, and you'd even have a competitive route to 64GB of memory for an X99 system.
  • Zotac's basic GeForce GTX 970 is $199.99 at Newegg today. While this recommendation may seem crazy, the card often still has legs at this price point compared to the Radeon RX 470 (and the vaporware RX 480 4GB reference card). If you don't care about Pascal's VR-related features, this card should offer performance similar to the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, as well, along with a little extra RAM. Considering that this particular Zotac card used to sell for $80-$100 more, we think it's a pretty good deal.
  • If you have a compatible Samsung phone and you're OK with buying refurbished, Best Buy has Samsung's Gear VR virtual-reality headset on sale for just $39.99. For someone who just wants to dip their toes into VR without committing a ton of cash, the Gear VR could be a decent first step.
  • Asus' Z170 Pro Gaming ATX motherboard is on sale for $134.99 at Newegg today with promo code EMCENFJ23. This board has been a staple of our System Guides for its fancy feature set and best-in-class firmware and fan control options. A $10 mail-in rebate could take that price down even further.
  • Plextor's M8pe 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD is on sale for $239.99 at Newegg with promo code ESCENFJ32. At 47 cents per gig, this drive is among the cheaper 500GB-class NVMe SSDs we've seen. Guru3D gave the drive high marks in its recent review, so it could be a good bet for a high-performance system drive.
  • There's a chance you're looking for a deal on something we didn't feature here. If that's the case, you can help The Tech Report by using the following referral links when you're out shopping: not only do we have a partnership with Newegg, but we also work with Best Buy, Adorama, RakutenWalmart, and Sam's Club. For more specific needs, you can also shop with our links at the Microsoft Store and Das Keyboard's shop.

That's it for this week's deals. On the off chance we missed a good one, be sure to share it with other TR gerbils in the comments.
