It's that time of year again—time for the annual Steam Winter Sale. This deals-fest puts countless games on deep discount, including many of this year's most popular and most critically-acclaimed titles. The sale lasts up through January 2, so you can wait until that sweet Christmas cash starts rolling in before you start buying.
Trying to list everything on sale would be a Herculean task, but there are some great deals worth highlighting. Among them are some of the year's best liked games, such as DOOM and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, each available at 67% off for $19.79. Indie titles like Inside and Hyper Light Drifter are up for 40% and 30% off, or $11.99 and $13.99 respectively. Stuff from last year is out there, too. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Game of the Year Edition, which includes both the "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine" expansions, is just $29.99.
Beneath the $10 mark are great games like Stardew Valley ($9.99), Spelunky ($2.99), and Transistor ($3.99). Just about anything you can think of is 25% off or more right now, and only the most recent releases are exmpted from the sale. Even Valve's own hardware is on sale—the Steam Link and Steam Controller can be purchased at half their usual price, only $49.48 for the pair.
In short, you can't go wrong. If you hang onto your wallet and spend wisely, you might be set for 2017 in the next few days.
Happening in concert with the sale is the first anual Steam Awards, which run now through December 30. The first award up for voting is the "Villain Most in Need of a Hug" award, with nominees from years past like Portal 2 and Far Cry 3 in the running. Voting for this award lasts up through 10 a.m. Pacific on December 22 before being replaced with the “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” award. The winners will be announced on December 31, and Valve says the winning games receive "eternal fame as winner of the first ever Steam Awards." Pretty prestigious.
