Friday night topic: Does speed still matter?

— 6:37 PM on January 11, 2002

So I was listening to NPR today on my drive home, and there was a dude from an industrial design firm on there talking about the new iMac. The interviewer asked if the system, which includes a relatively pokey 700-800MHz G4 processor, was fast enough to sell well. The design guy answered that computers are now fast enough that speed doesn't matter for 90% of people—and maybe 95%. This view is becoming increasingly common in certain circles. But is it true? Discuss.
