IBM comments on drive reliability

C|Net has a story on IBM's current hard drive woes. The most important statement from IBM is that they will honor warranties, regardless of how much you use your drive.

"We still stand behind our three-year warranty if people want to use it two hours a day or 24 hours a day,"
While that doesn't save any lost data, it is nice to see IBM honor the warranty, despite their recommended power-on hours.

The article goes on to suggest that we may see a fork in ATA drives, with one camp focusing on speed and the other on 24/7 reliability. Since IBM appears to be the only manufacturer having problems with reliability for its fast IDE drives, this suggestion appears to be more a stab at damage control than anything else.
