Athlon goes Celeron

— 1:11 AM on January 23, 2000

Yes, it's something we've known about for a while, but the fact that AMD is going to be integrating a full-speed L2 cache into the Athlon chip, a la the second-gen Celeron and PIII processors, is making headlines lately as the event approaches. Check out this TechWeb/EETimes article for more info. (Yet another Maizel-supplied news link.) Of course, Athlons already have many more transistors on-chip than competing Intel designs, so an Athlon with 256KB of on-chip L2 cache will be rather massive, in relative terms. Also, once this happens, many Athlons will be socketed, at which point overclocking via "Golden Fingers" cards won't be possible. Hmph.
