Sun to use AMD Opteron chips?

— 11:32 PM on May 8, 2002

I'm going to promote this one from Shortbread since if it's true, it's huge. The Inquirer is reporting that Sun will use the AMD processor formerly known as Sledgehammer, Opteron, in its own systems. This story seems plausible for a number of reasons, not least of which is the fact AMD's Hammer architecture and platform, with all of those high-speed, unidirectional HyperTransport links running everywhere, looks more like a high-end server setup than anything else.

Then again, Sun moved to can Solaris on x86 earlier this year. Or maybe not? Or maybe the Opteron boxen would run a Sun Linux distro? Hmm.

Whatever the case, the Sun + AMD combo could be quite potent. Time will tell.
