Beware penguins with blades

— 12:00 AM on June 3, 2002

The Inquirer has an interesting story regarding a component for Cisco's Catalyst 6500 series switches. The article states that Cisco's NAM blade module is actually a PC running Linux. Standard PC ports (including keyboard, mouse, VGA and USB) are hidden behind a plate labeled "For Vendor Use Only."

The article provides compelling evidence that the module really is a Linux PC, and poses some interesting questions, such as whether or not the use of Linux in this fashion violates the GPL or any other licenses. What do the Linux faithful out there think of this development? Is Cisco pulling a licensing no-no? Comment away.
