AMD and Intel power Terminator 3

— 9:52 AM on July 22, 2002

Industrial Light and Magic, the special effects studio behind movies like Star Wars, is replacing RISC-based SGI workstations with ones based on Intel's Pentium 4 processor. AMD hasn't been left out, though. ILM also recently installed a 1,000-processor render farm full of Athlons.

As prices fall and performance increases, we're only going to see more companies replacing RISC-Unix systems with faster and cheaper x86 boxes. While this bodes well for Intel and AMD's workstation offerings, the absence of AMD-based computers from corporate-favorite Dell could give Intel a considerable edge.
