A 3GHz Pentium 4 for the holidays?

— 2:51 AM on July 23, 2002

Intel's latest Pentium 4 processors are really coming into their own as clock speeds increase and the front-side bus ramps to 533MHz. Now, according to this article over at C|Net, Intel is moving ahead the release schedule for faster Pentium 4 processors.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker will come out with a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 for desktops later this quarter, and a 3GHz Pentium 4 in time for the holiday buying season, said sources close to the company. Earlier, the company said it would come out with a 3GHz Pentium 4 in the fourth quarter.
If AMD can't answer Intel's faster Pentium 4s with quicker Athlon XPs of its own, Intel could be well on its way to having the fastest desktop processor across the board. Then again, a 3GHz Pentium 4 could be a great motivator for AMD to increase Barton's front side bus to 166MHz.

All this jockeying for position might just keep us all entertained until Hammer is released into the wild.
