Low-bit-rate audio codecs compared

— 12:27 PM on July 30, 2002

Which 64kbit/s audio codec sounds the best? The results of a study designed to test just that are out, and MP3 Pro just barely edged Ogg overall.

The test uses 12 samples from different genres, and as you might expect, different codecs excel in each of those genres. 64kbit/s may seem excessively low, but it's a great bit rate for portable devices where storage is limited, lower-quality headphones are common, and background noise can often make it difficult to hear the subtleties of higher-quality recordings.
