Enthusiasts driving the market

We all know that gamers and enthusiasts are pushing the PC platform to new heights, but now mainstream media giant CNN is taking notice. Pushing the PC platform forward is about more than just performance, though. Today [H]ard|OCP has a review up of a motherboard from Chaintech that includes a wild color scheme, front-mounted peripheral ports, rounded IDE cables, and even a CD version of ThizLinux.

Mainstream users may not need a lot of these extras, but it looks like companies are taking cues from the enthusiast community when looking to differentiate their products. If you run the numbers, the size of the enthusiast market is dwarfed by the size of the mainstream PC user market, but that certainly hasn't stopped companies from pushing the envelope.
