Radeon 9700 Pro experiencing unexpected demand

— 4:55 AM on September 5, 2002

You won't be able to fully unleash the potential of ATI's latest Radeon 9700 Pro graphics cards until Microsoft releases DirectX 9 in November, and games won't really take advantage of the new chip until well into next year, but that's not stopping cards from exceeding ATI's projected demand. DigiTimes reports:

Despite the market concerns, the high-end specifications, although they are not necessarily all available for immediate use, still appeal to consumers and product sales have even grown to exceed the company’s original projections. To meet the rising demand, ATI had to place additional wafer orders with its foundry partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in the third quarter.
Just how high is demand? Gigabyte recently ordered 10,000 chips in August on top of its initial batch. So much for the NV30's impending paper launch putting doubt into the minds of would-be buyers.
