Madison tapes out
The Inquirer is reporting that Madison, the third iteration of Intel's Itanium processor, has taped out. Madison promises better performance than current Itanium processors, and features a whopping 6MB of L3 cache. The new Itanium revision should also scale higher than previous processors, potentially up to speeds of 1.5GHz.
Madison taping out is good news for Intel, especially since a court has ruled that the Itanium processor infringes on several Intergraph patents. Intel can ask the judge to reconsider the ruling, otherwise it faces a $150 million charge, and Intergraph is kindly offering to license the patents to Intel for a cool $100 million on top of that.
