Linux on the desktop? Which desktop?

— 1:56 PM on October 17, 2002

There's an provocative article over at the News Factor that asks whether Linux is really going to rule the desktop. At first, you might think that even the idea that Linux could possible rule the desktop is ludicrous, and maybe it is. Still, countries like India and China have shown great interest in the free OS, and they have well over a billion potential desktops between them.

Perhaps it's better to switch the question around a little. Which desktops does Linux rule? Which desktops could Linux rule? Yeah, I know there should probably be a "dude" in there somewhere, but let's get back to the question. In its current incarnation, what kind of desktops are most appropriate for Linux, and what must be done to the free OS, and perhaps peoples' attitudes towards it, to expand its suitability to most, if not all desktops?
