Madison to hit 1.5GHz

— 4:12 AM on November 29, 2002

Intel is claiming that Madison, the next version of its Itanium processor, will likely have a clock speed of 1.5GHz. That's a 50% boost in clock speed over the current McKinley version of Itanium, and just a little faster than AMD was showing Hammer clocked at Comdex. Of course, the two architectures are so fundamentally different that one having a clock speed advantage over the other doesn't mean much. However, Intel ramping up Itanium clock speeds does give AMD a moving target to hit with high-end Opteron server processors. The longer AMD waits, the faster Intel will get.
