$500 notebooks in 2H 2003?

— 2:25 AM on December 5, 2002

Apparently, Inventec is looking to bring $500 notebooks to market in the second half of next year:

Company president Tom Cho said that without using high-end processors, which target only power users, it is possible to make a US$500 notebook. Cho noted that the model would not be a DeskNote, which uses desktop components in a notebook-like computer, but rather a fully-functional notebook with a battery and keyboard.
Low-end notebooks are already available for as low as $899, so $500 doesn't seem too farfetched for next year. These cheap notebooks could make portability the next driving force behind mainstream upgrades for users that don't need the latest and greatest high performance hardware, especially if wireless networking gets into the mix.
