New Netscape blocks pop-ups

— 1:10 PM on December 13, 2002

Netscape 7.01 has become the latest browser to block pop-up advertising. The move makes Microsoft's Internet Explorer look particularly lacking, since it's now the only major browser not to offer blocking technology. I've noticed pop-ups on more than just a few Microsoft sites, which might explain things.

Though some articles have claimed that pop-ups are dying, I still haven't noticed an overall decrease in the number of extra windows I have to close when browsing the web. But at least pop-ups are easy to throttle. I have to admit that I'm not so keen on Microsoft adding pop-up killing features to Internet Explorer simply because that will make it so easy for everyone to get around pop-up ads. If everyone can get around pop-ups, advertisers may resort to more insidious forms of web advertising that are harder to bypass.
