Mobile PC to use desktop graphics cards

— 12:07 PM on December 19, 2002

Quanta is set to launch a new mobile PC in March that could become the ultimate LAN party rig. The "Mobile PC" will be heavy, but it will have a battery and be compatible with desktop parts.

According to the company, it will use desktop CPUs, motherboards, graphics cards, hard drives and memory. Consequently, the mobile PC will be heavier and larger than existing mobile PCs. Including the battery, it will weigh seven kilograms and measure 52mm in thickness. Mobile PCs now on the market weight about 3-4 kilograms.
Obviously, the weight of a Mobile PC will make it unsuitable for certain applications, but the ability to swap in a standard desktop graphics card will no doubt entice some consumers, especially if Mobile PCs are sold as barebones systems.
