Verizon must give up suspected file trader's name

— 2:14 AM on January 22, 2003

A court has ruled that Internet service provider Verizon must give up the name of a customer that has been accused of downloading over 600 copyrighted songs in a single day. The decision is a huge win for the RIAA, and if it withstand's Verizon's appeals, the RIAA will have a potent weapon in the fight against illegal file sharing.

With mainstream media like CNN covering the story, even casual file swappers should get word of the judge's decision. If the RIAA makes an example of the accused, the fear of being caught could make casual file swappers think twice before firing up their favorite peer to peer client.
