SQL worm swamps Internet
A worm that exploits a hole in MS SQL Server is slowing down traffic all over the Internet, and it seriously degraded Internet service in a number of places last night. This beastie, dubbed SQL Slammer by people who devise names for such things, apparently disabled 5 of 13 root name servers on its way to worldwide fame. Microsoft posted a patch for this expoit over six months ago, but tsk tsk, too many admins running SQL Server boxes exposed to the 'net haven't applied the patches.
The worm's DoS attack hit our web server about 11:30PM last night with whopping amount of traffic, sustained, for over 8 hours straight. What fun.
