What's up with Trident's XP4?

— 1:14 PM on February 21, 2003

AnandTech previewed Trident's XP4 graphics cards two times all the way back in August, and at that time, the XP4 was expected in October. October came and went, but at last year's Comdex, Trident officially announced the XP4 and touted four partners that would supposedly be building graphics cards based on the new chip. That was in November, and I haven't heard as much as a whisper about the chip since then. Even Trident's press contact doesn't know what's up with the chip.

At this time, it seems unlikely that Trident will make a triumphant return to the desktop with the XP4. With ATI and NVIDIA frantically scrambling to release faster products and gain market share, I have to wonder just how competitive the smaller fish can be.
