IBM sees PowerPC 970-based blades at 2.5GHz
IBM has announced that its PowerPC Blade, which features the much-anticipated 64-bit PowerPC 970, will be offered with speed grades between 1.8 and 2.5GHz. The announcement doesn't say whether the PowerPC 970 will be available at speeds of 2.5GHz at launch, but that high-density blade servers will be offered at 2.5GHz eventually is encouraging. Blade servers don't exactly have a lot of room for exotic processor cooling, so either IBM has worked out a really slick cooling solution for its PowerPC Blades, or the PowerPC 970 isn't much of a space heater.
