Intel puts new 800MHz Pentium 4 chips on hold

— 9:01 AM on April 14, 2003

We've just learned from Intel that the new Pentium 4 3.0GHz chips with support for 800MHz front-side bus speeds have been put on hold temporarily. The company is investigating a problem with a small number of those chips, and will not be shipping more of them until the problem is resolved. At present, we don't have any details about the exact nature of the problem, and Intel wasn't keen on spilling the beans about that. We'll see what we can find out.

Shipping of the 875P chipset will continue, but without the accompanying processors, would-be buyers may be left hanging in the wind. We'll keep an eye on this one.
