Athlon 64 to arrive early?
This article over at DigiTimes suggests that AMD may release an early batch of Athlon 64 processors ahead of the chip's scheduled launch in September. Motherboard manufacturers have apparently been told that AMD will start shipping Athlon64 3100+ and 3400+ processors in August, one month early. Based on HP's leaked Athlon 64 system specs, I'd expect the 3100+ and 3400+ to be clocked at 1.8 and 2.0GHz, respectively.
That AMD may be moving up the launch schedule for the Athlon 64 is certainly good news for enthusiasts who can't wait to get their hands on the new chip. Because chipset and motherboard manufacturers have been working on Athlon 64 designs for quite some time, it seems unlikely that they'd have to scramble to release products a month early. However, I wouldn't expect to see much in the way of desktop software optimized for the AMD64 platform by August or even September. It also seems unlikely that Microsoft will have a non-beta version of Windows XP for the AMD64 platform by the August/September timeframe.
