Time Warner to open cable system to ISPs

— 8:01 PM on February 29, 2000

Users of Time Warner's cable modem service may soon get a chance to choose their own ISP. AOL Time Warner announced today that they would be letting other ISPs use their cable network. It is speculated that AOL Time Warner may have realized that opening up their networkwould help get antitrust investigators off their back. AOL is also banking that users will go for AOL brand name recognition when choosing a cable ISP. I'm not too sure about that one, as most cable modem users get service because of the technology, not the ISP. The announcement left several important specifics unanswered on the conditions for other ISP's use, so we'll have to wait and see what happens.
