ATI to roll out Radeon SE line

— 3:10 AM on July 22, 2003

Xbit Labs has the goods on ATI's upcoming Radeon 9x00 SE cards, which will apparently fill out the Radeon 9800, 9600, and 9200 lines. On the Radeon 9200 front, the "SE" cards will reportedly feature lower clock speeds and possibly even a narrow 64-bit memory bus. At least for now, it looks like ATI will be sticking with DirectX 8.1-class hardware for its low-end products, which will continue to put the 9200 series at a distinct disadvantage against NVIDIA's budget GeForce FX 5200.

As far as the mid-range Radeon 9600 and high-end 9800 go, it looks like several "SE" cards could become available. In the name of consistency, I'd hope that ATI would keep the Radeon 9600 and 9800 SE cards positioned below the standard Radeons, but ATI's numbering and naming schemes haven't always made a lot of sense in the past.
