Gateway to get behind AMD64

— 1:42 PM on August 8, 2003

AMD Board has apparently seen confidential documents pointing to Gateway as a future supporter of AMD's 64-bit processors. The article suggests that Gateway could be interested in both the Athlon 64 and Opteron line, which should give the platforms additional credibility. Don't expect Dell to jump on the bandwagon, though.

Honestly, I wonder how big OEMs like Gateway will deal with operating systems for the Athlon 64. Gateway can't expect many customers to want systems bundled with Linux, but all reports seem to point to 2004 as the earliest we'll see a final 64-bit version of Windows XP. I suspect that OEMs will offer current versions of Windows XP in the interim, but will buyers get a free upgrade to an AMD64 version when it's released? I'd hope so. While we're on the subject, it would be nice for Microsoft to let current XP license holders upgrade to the 64-bit OS for free or at least at a nominal cost.
