AMD, NVIDIA team on tourney boxen

— 12:00 AM on August 18, 2003

Quakecon tournament matches this year were played on computers supplied by AMD and NVIDIA. On the show floor, this slick-looking black-and-green box showed off the same basic hardware in style.

These systems were built with Athlon 64 engineering sample, a "top-secret NVIDIA nForce motherboard technology," 512MB of DDR400 memory, a 7200-rpm Western Digital hard drive, and a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra graphics card. I played Quake III on one of the floor demo systems for a couple of minutes, and the frame rate counter was routinely hitting the 400fps mark.
