VIA to release another Socket A chipset

— 11:21 AM on August 27, 2003

A couple of sources are reporting that VIA will release a Socket A KT880 chipset this fall. The KT880 supports a 400MHz front-side bus, dual-channel DDR400 memory, and shares a number of other features with VIA's recently released PT800 Pentium 4 chipset.

Since Athlon 64 processors aren't expected in significant volume until next year, VIA hopes that the KT880 will line up better against NVIDIA's nForce2 Ultra 400 in the meantime. Of course, that doesn't leave much time for the recently released KT600 to make a dent in the market; I'd expect the KT880's performance to be better.
