Home Theater PCs go mainstream

— 2:22 AM on September 5, 2003

The popularity of media-centric PCs continues to grow, and while home-brewed small form factor systems are de rigueur for enthusiasts, a number of major OEMs are also jumping on the bandwagon. Dell and Sony are expected to unveil new PCs based on Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition later this month. Currently, the only major manufacturers producing Media Center Edition PCs are HP, Gateway, and Toshiba.

Dell and Sony's late-September entry into the Home Theater PC market is timed to coincide with a new version of Windows XP Media Center Edition. No details are available on what new features or functionality this latest "Harmony" build will include, but I'd like to see the software be at least on par with what TiVo has offered for years. It can't be that hard, can it?
