Duron hacked to expose extra L2 cache
Xbit Labs is reporting that the folks over at Overclockers.ru have successfully enabled the dormant cache in AMD's Duron processor. Simply connecting a bridge apparently gives the Durons access to 256KB of L2 cache, suggesting that the chip's core is identical to AMD's "Thoroughbred" Athlon XP. Of course, not all Durons are stable with their extra L2 cache enabled; the chips are probably binned Athlon XPs whose L2 cache didn't pass AMD's internal validation tests.
Considering that the cheapest Athlon XPs sell for under $50 online, Duron modding isn't likely to catch on. Still, it's a pretty neat hack.
