12 year-old settles with RIAA for $2,000
A number of you emailed in an updated on the "RIAA sues 12 year-old" story we ran yesterday. The 12 year-old's mother has settled out of court for a measly $2,000. Two grand isn't small change by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a far cry from what she could have been liable for under current copyright law.
Now that the RIAA has settled with at least one of its targets for only $2,000, and others for reportedly as little as $3,000, it should be interesting to see what happens to the rest. The RIAA clearly doesn't expect to make much money directly from the lawsuits, but they have stated that future settlements will likely be more costly for song swappers.
