VIA announces new audio codec

— 12:29 PM on September 25, 2003

VIA has added a new 8-channel codec chip to its Vinyl Audio line. It's likely we'll see the "Eight-TRAC" paired with VIA's Envy24PT and HT-S audio chips in discrete sound cards and motherboards, but the codec only support audio up to 20-bit audio at sampling rates up to 96kHz. Since many of today's common codec chips top out at 48kHz, the Eight-TRAC is an improvement, but it can't preserve the Envy's 24-bit audio just yet.
