Longhorn three years away

— 5:06 AM on October 14, 2003

It looks like Longhorn, the next major Windows release, won't be released until 2006. According to presentations made by Microsoft's own executives, Longhorn is three years away. Previously, Microsoft had targeted Longhorn for a 2005 release.

With Longhorn three years off, Microsoft may choose to test drive new features with free XP service packs or retail additions to the operating system. Microsoft probably won't be making any sweeping changes to XP anytime soon, but it would be nice to see a couple of new features trickle out of Redmond while we wait for Longhorn.
