Friday night topic: China in space

— 4:07 PM on October 17, 2003

If you believe, China put a man into space. Lt. Col Yang Liwei became the first "Taikonaut" to be sent into space, capping off an 11-year effort by China to put a man into orbit. Liewi spent a total of 21 hours in space, circling the world 14 times before touching down safely in Mongolia. Experts speculate that the mission cost at least $1 billion, which considering China's massive population, doesn't feel all that extravagant.
