Dell preps hard drive-based MP3 player

Dell is getting ready to debut a hard drive-based MP3 player to compete with Apple's popular iPod. The new Dell Digital Jukebox will initially come in 15 and 20GB capacities and cost $249 and $329, respectively. As you might expect, Dell's new "DJ"s are cheaper than Apple's pricey iPods. Dell is also claiming that its player has twice the battery life of the iPod, but it looks like the iPod will be a couple of ounces lighter.

Dell's music player will be bundled with Musicmatch software and compatible with its online music service, though the player will hopefully function as a simple removable storage device under Windows. As of yet, there are no pictures available of the Digital Jukebox, which may not be able to match the iPod's much-coveted style.
