Microsoft offers bounty for worm writers

— 5:29 AM on November 5, 2003

C|Net is reporting that Microsoft is offering up two $250,000 bounties for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the MSBlast and SoBig worms. Analysts have been quick to point out that bounties won't do a thing to plug Windows vulnerabilities, however, bounties may prove to be an effective means to weed out information on those responsible for virus and worm attacks.

Though Microsoft no doubt wants to bring those responsible for SoBig and MSBlast to justice, I have to wonder if Redmond thinks there's any chance that aspiring worm writers will be deterred by the threat of bounties. With the amount of cash Microsoft has on hand, it may only be a matter of time before they up the ante to seven figures, too.
