MTV to enter online music market

— 6:51 AM on November 5, 2003

As if the online music business weren't crowded enough, it looks like MTV is getting ready to throw its hat into the digital download ring. MTV's music service will compete directly with iTunes and other online music services, but MTV's brand name and audience of television viewers could give it an edge.

There's nothing to suggest that MTV's service will offer substantially lower prices, higher audio quality, or fewer DRM restrictions than the competition, but I wonder if video content will be available for sale or bundled with music downloads. I wouldn't mind building up a library of my favorite music videos, many of which are unavailable for purchase, provided the encoding quality was high and the DRM restrictions were reasonable enough to permit fair use.
