HP offers Athlon 64 desktop

C|Net is reporting that OEM giant HP has added AMD's Athlon 64 3200+ to its line of PC desktops. With the Presario 8000Z, HP will become the first major PC manufacturer to offer an Athlon 64-based desktop in North America. HP is apparently planning to add an Athlon 64-powered desktop to its Pavilion line before the end of the year, too.

With Presario 8000Z configurations available for as little as $1,239, HP can probably lay claim to having the world's most affordable 64-bit desktop PC. The company is even considering producing a high-end gaming system based on the Athlon 64 FX, though I suspect such a product wouldn't be released until AMD switches to a 939-pin socket that doesn't require registered memory.
