Technically speaking what has happened is that two older NT dynamic link libraries, rsaenh.dll and schannel.dll, have replaced the Windows 2000 version. Windows 2000 log-in sequence simply won't work with these older files in place.
The fix, as with so many problems, is to reinstall Windows. That, my friends, is true security. Let's see those upstart open-sourcers try to beat Redmond on this one.
