Apex's VIA-powered ApeXtreme console has won the CES 2004 Innovation Award. The ApeXtreme is half gaming console, half media center, and all-VIA under the hood. Here are a few of console's more notable specs:

  • 1.4GHz VIA C3 processor.
  • 256MB DDR memory (at least 64MB dedicated to video)
  • 8-pipe S3 DeltaChrome DirectX 9 graphics
  • 20GB hard drive
  • VIA Vinyl Six-TRAC audio
  • DVD/CD drive
  • Six USB 2.0 ports
  • Windows XP embedded
The console will apparently support over 2500 Windows games at launch, and will also have DVD/VCD, music, and picture slideshow playback capabilities. Versions of the ApeXtreme will be available for $299 and $399 (the above specs refer to the more expensive of the two).
