Prescott overvolting dangerous?

— 10:08 AM on February 20, 2004

The cold, HardOCP is hot on the trail of a problem with voltage handling on current motherboards with Intel's new Prescott Pentium 4 "E" chips. MSI has disabled core voltage options altogether in its new Prescott-enabled BIOS in order to prevent bad, barbecue-like things from happening, and Kyle is digging for answers why it's so. The key to it all appears to be the new dynamic power and cooling mechanism on Prescott. Kyle hasn't got it all sorted out yet, but his tentative conclusions underscore our verdict in our own Prescott review: this chip isn't a very good consumer product just yet—especially, it now seems, if you're looking to do some overclocking.
