Does ATI have production R420 silicon?

— 12:25 PM on February 23, 2004

According to this article over at The Inquirer, ATI now has production silicon for its new R420 graphics chip. ATI apparently doesn't want to launch the chip too early and risk cannibalizing sales of its high-end Radeon 9800 XT. Of course, with Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 still in development, gamers aren't desperate for next-gen graphics cards just yet.

If ATI has production R420 silicon this early, partners could have extra time to develop cards and cooling solutions that go above and beyond reference designs. Let's hope this new generation of graphics cards has a little more variety than the last.
