HP on the verge of Opteron announcement

— 3:13 AM on February 24, 2004

Despite claiming Intel's 64-bit extensions offer "unmatched choice, innovation, and value," HP is expected to add an Opteron-based server to its lineup. HP's adoption of Opteron would be particularly dramatic given the company's hand in developing Intel's Itanium processor.

With IBM, Sun, and now possibly HP enamoured by the Opteron's undeniable charms, one has to wonder what it would take to catch Dell's eye. Apparently, the company has no plans to use AMD chips, citing the fact that corporate users have "not yet found confidence in AMD." Perhaps HP can help corporate users find that confidence.
