Canada rules music sharing legal

Thanks to nearly half a dozen TR readers who wrote in about a recent Canadian Federal Court ruling that deems sharing music over peer-to-peer networks as within the bounds of Canadian copyright law.

"No evidence was presented that the alleged infringers either distributed or authorized the reproduction of sound recordings," von Finckenstein wrote in his 28-page ruling. "They merely placed personal copies into their shared directories which were accessible by other computer users via a P2P service."
The ruling doesn't appear to condone or legitimize downloading music from peer-to-peer networks, but sharing looks OK.
