NVIDIA discounts GPU prices

— 3:12 AM on April 16, 2004

According to this story over at DigiTimes, NVIDIA is offering GPU discounts between 10 and 20% to graphics card makers in an attempt to clear out inventory before the end of its fiscal first quarter. Clearing out current-generation GPUs would presumably make room for NV4x chips, too.

Unfortunately, NVIDIA's GPU discounts won't necessarily be passed along to consumers. Higher DRAM prices have raised production costs for graphics card manufacturers, and lower GPU costs may only even things out. Let's hope that rising DRAM prices at least stop manufacturers from inappropriately speccing low-end graphics cards with 256MB of memory.
