Paris to emasculate K8 processor

— 1:42 PM on April 27, 2004

Later this year, AMD will issue a new entry-level processor. This CPU, code-named "Paris," will transition the company away from its remaining K7/Socket A processors by using a K8 core and Socket 754. Paris will retain the Athlon XP name, carry only 256KB L2 cache, and like its K7 brother, will not support 64-bit extensions. The chip should be fully compatible with existing Athlon 64 chipsets and is expected to drive the price of K8 motherboards to current K7 levels, leaving much gaiety to be found in Paris.
