New iTunes adds support for WMA, lossless audio

— 3:11 PM on April 28, 2004

TR regular Thresher points out that Apple has added a number of new features to iTunes on the first anniversary of the iTunes Music Store's unveiling. What's particularly interesting about the software update is that iTunes now supports DRM-less WMA files and a new lossless audio format called Apple Lossless. Apple Lossless promises to deliver true CD quality audio at half the size, and the new format will apparently work iPod portable music players. However, it's unclear whether Apple will allow competing devices and software to play Apple Lossless files, or whether the iTunes Music Store will offer lossless tracks.
