Pepsi drinkers balk at iTunes bottle caps

— 12:53 PM on April 30, 2004

It looks like Pepsi's iTunes promotion has fallen significantly short of expectations. The beverage giant released 100 million free iTunes Music Store downloads under Pepsi bottle caps, but only 5 million of those free songs have been redeemed. Despite a prominent Super Bowl ad and plenty of publicity surrounding the giveaway, Pepsi drinkers seem generally uninterested in free music downloads. The Mac community has gone to great lengths to help consumers spot winning bottle caps and recycle unwanted downloads, but neither effort seems to have had a significant impact on song redemptions.
