Microsoft confirms 4th quarter schedule for XP-64

— 2:50 AM on May 5, 2004

The Inquirer has confirmation from Microsoft that the AMD64 version of Windows XP isn't scheduled for release until the fourth quarter of this year. Of course, AMD's K8 processors are exceptional performers with the current 32-bit version of Windows XP, so a 64-bit OS is hardly needed for AMD to be competitive. Still, it's disappointing that we won't see a final version of XP-64 until more than a year after the Athlon 64's release. Let's hope that software makers will be quick to offer AMD64-optimized builds once XP-64 becomes widely available.
